I just notice this and am curious.

What is the difference between a not stared post and a starred post?

The one with a lock I get....but the stars?

Post with a star means that no new posts have been made either recently or since you last saw that post.... I'm not sure of which... but it means no new posts have been made in that thread (original post)

hope that didn't confuse you more :P
